The Sunday morning Fish Market (Fischmarkt) is Hamburg’s oldest outdoor market and dates back to 1703. The spectacular glass and steel former auction hall bustles with raucous shouting traders, locals and tourists and can also be a great way to finish off a heavy night of partying in Hamburg. Kunsthalle Art Gallery
Art lovers should make a bee line for the Hamburg Kunsthalle, opposite the main train station. The Kunsthalle is one of the largest art galleries in Germany and consists of two buildings linked by an underground passage together housing over 3000 paintings and 400 scultures. The recent Gallery for Contemporary Art contains a collection of works from 1960 to the present day, including artists such as Hockney and Warhol and German artists such as Rebecca Horn, Max Beckman and Gerhardt Richter, whereas the original red brick building contains religious works from the 14th Century, works by Old Dutch Masters such as Hans Holbein the Elder and Rembrandt. Other collections of Classical Modern Art include paintings by Kandinsky, Macke, Munch, Liebermann and die Brucke and der Blauer Reiter groups.

St Michael’s Church
For a breathtaking view of Hamburg (not least because you will be out of breath by the time you make it up there), climb the 459 steps of the St Michael Church, known locally as Michel. The good news is that there is also a lift to the top.
The Church is the finest example of a baroque-style church in Northern Germany. It has had a somewhat unfortunate history however. The first church on the site was constructed between 1649 and 1661 but was destroyed by lightning a century later. It was then rebuilt between 1750 and 1786 but destroyed by fire. A replica was destroyed in the 2nd World War. The current church is a reconstruction.
A trumpeter plays a solo from the steeple twice a day at 10am and 9pm and a Multivision show inside the steeple plays a film of Hamburg’s history. The church also has the largest clock tower in Germany.
