Eating
Budget: The area of Barrio del Carmen has several
cheaper restaurants or you could try “El Rincon de Roberto” (Conde
Altea, 35). Described as a café-bar/Tasca, serving a good selection
of food at low prices.
Mid-Range: La Pepica (Paseo Neptuno, 2, +3496
371 03 66 is famous for its paella and positioned on the beach. Or take a
trip to “Taberna Valenciana” (Calle San Ignaciode Loyola, 1. +3496
384 74 66), a traditional family run Valencian tavern serving a wide range
of dishes.
Luxury: “Torrijos” (Dr Sumsi, 4 +3496
373 29 49) is the highest Michelin rated restaurant in the area. Or you could
try “Burdeous in Love” (C/Mar, 4, +3496 391 43 50), providing
gourmet tapas in upmarket surroundings.
Drinking
Budget: “Kalea in Alameda”, (just
off P1 on a side street). Or a student classic (Rocafull Café P1, Xuquer,14),
with lots of papers, games and various dj’s. Special offers run on weekdays.
Mid-Range: “Canovas”, or “Pemberton”
(Mar, 4, Pl. de la Reina) in the centre. Both have a nice atmosphere.
Luxury: “Taverna Cavallers”, (C/Cavallers,
23). One of the finest bars in the Carmen, with a great selection of wines.
Things To See And Do
- The Historic Quarter: The Cathedral and the Miguelete, Basilica of the Virgen
de los Desamparados, The Church of Santa Catalina, and the magnificent Silk
Exchange.
- The City Centre: The City Hall
- The Turia Gardens: The Palau de la Músique
- Beaches: Lavante and Malvarrosa beaches are both white sand beaches easily
accessible using the modern tram network.
- Museums: The IVAM museum of modern art, the Bancaixa gallery and the City
of Arts and Science Complex are well worth a visit.
- Oceanographic Park: 80,000 square meters of submarine city. You can see
and learn about hundreds of different habitats and enjoy the biggest aquarium
in Europe.
- Mestalla Stadium: The home to Valencia’s team, a must see for all
football fans.
Shopping
Valencia’s specialism is its markets. Ranging from crafts and ceramics
to a wealth of fresh food, vintage and books. The Mercado Cantral hosts the
very best in fresh food whilst Plaza Luis Casanova offers a huge weekly flea
market on a Sunday. Lovers of antique books, taxidermy and all things a little
unusual will be catered for in the El Carmen region.
If you are looking for department stores, “Corte Ingles” is the
place to be, Spain’s newest and largest store is situated near to the
City of Arts and Sciences. Calle de Colón houses the majority of high
street brands including Zara and Mango, and for designer apparel try Loewe
on Calle Marqués de Dos Aguas.
Beyond The City
- La Tomatina – Held on one Wednesday morning in August each year. 400,000
people cram into the streets of Bunõl, 40 miles from Valencia and pelt
each other with thousands of tomatoes!
- Requena – Old wine producing town 40 miles from Valencia.
- Parc Natural de L’Albufera – Nature reserve just south of the
city.
