Budget:
La Bodeguilla de Ramón, Almeria City
A hole-in-the-wall tapas bar with plastic chairs and tables outside, cheap but cheerful.
Mid-range:
Casa Puga, Almeria City
One of Almeria’s classic tapas bars. Stand by the counter with the regaulrs or take a table at the side beneth dangling hams and wines racked upside down (the wine list is amazing). The bar has been under the ownership of the same family since 1870!
Luxury:
Restaurante Valentin, Almeria City
There are anumber of good tapas bars/restuarants in this street (C/Tenor Iribarne 19). This classy place specialise in seafood and has an excellent menú degustación at €24.
Drinking
Almeria has a selection of small bars on offer. For more lively drinking venues head for the Mojácar playa area where you can find themed and British bars.
Things to See and Do
The hilltop Alcazaba's hefty walls and towers dominate the city and command magnificent views. It was founded during the first half of the 10th century. At the heart is the Segundo Recinto while at the east end is the Ermita de San Juan chapel which was converted from a mosque by the Catholic Monarchs. The Tercer Recinto at the north-west end of the Alcazaba is a fortress which was added by the Catholic Monarchs.
Shopping in Almeria City
Most of the shops are located on the streets radiating out from the Puerta de Purchena and particualrry in thew streets between here and Plaza San Pedro to the south.
Cathedral
Almeria's cathedral is at the heart of the old part of the city and was begun in 1524 to replace a predecessor wrecked by the earthquake in 1522. The architecture is a combination of Gothic and Renaissance, its fortress like appearance was due to suffering raids by pirates from North Africa. The north facade is an elaborate mid 16th century design by Juan de Orea.
