Top 10 Things to do Whilst on Holiday in Almeria
10) Horseback riding...
Ride in the hoof prints of Harrison Ford while you soak up the Spanish sunshine. Miles of rugged wilderness and barren desert make Almeria the ideal place for horseback riding. The unspoilt scenery of Tabernas has been used in many films such as Kubrick's 2001 and Spielberg's Indiana Jones.
9) Take a trip up to ancient Alcazaba...
Founded during the first half of the 10th century, Alcazaba's historic walls and towers dominate the city. Climb to the top of the Torre de la Vela for magnificent views of the harbour and the Granada region.
8) Try your hand at a new sport...
Bossaball is the latest craze sweeping the sandy beaches of Almeria. This new energetic sport is basically volleyball on trampolines with some football, gymnastics and Brazilian music thrown in for good measure.
7) Cabo de Gata-Nijar Natural Park...
If you want to escape the crowd for a day then visit this stunning nature reserve. It features some of Europe's most original geological features including mountain ranges, sand dunes and beautiful coral reef. It's great for diving and windsurfing.
6) Romantic old town of Mojacar...
To the east of Almeria you'll discover the beautiful resort of Mojacar, a charming hill top town with a maze of winding narrow Kasbah streets, whitewashed houses and 17km's of unspoilt beaches.
5) Reach for the stars...
Stargazers can visit the Calar Alto Astronomic Observatory in Gergals on the Sierra de los Filabres. It sits on a mountain 2,168 metres above sea level. From here you'll see spectacular views of space, the mountains of Sierra Nevada and apparently on a good night you can see Africa.
4) Get your kit off at Vera Playa...
Spain's nudist capital and arguably the world's best naturist resort Vera Playa is open all year round and offers beach bars, sun beds and pedalos. There's even a naturist's four-star hotel! So if you're curious to see what an all-over tan looks like this is the place. Don't forget the sun lotion!
3) Visit movie sets of old American Western movies...
Over the years, Almeria has been the setting for many film classics such as A Fistful of Dollars, The Magnificent Seven and Lawrence of Arabia. Sample the life of a gunslinger and check out old movie sets in Wild West theme parks Mini Hollywood and Texas Hollywood.
2) Scuba diving and snorkelling...
Almeria is one of the best places to go diving in Spain especially the Cabo de Gata. Expect to see: snappers, ocean sunfish, barracudas, eagle rays, morays, white breams, and red sea fish. Experienced divers have the opportunity to do some amazing deep-sea wreck dives.
1) The home of the Cave Dwellers...
At first glance it looks like something from a Lord of the Rings movie but these are real homes where modern-day cave dwellers have burrowed their houses out of the soft rock of the mountains. Staying in the town of Guadix could make an interesting holiday as you can stay in a cave house.
You probably won't find anything like this anywhere else in the world.
