Avignon opens up the Provence region of South East France. The city, named the City of the Popes, has plenty of evidence of the Popes’ stay in Avignon, which was, for some time the capital of the Medieval western world.
Avignon also has great access to wider areas of South East France with its extensive high speed rail network. The famous TGV rail network provides speedy travel to Lyon, Grenoble, Geneva, Nice, Marseille and many more from Avignon
Today Avignon is a capital of culture, with its world-renowned Theatre Festival. Started in 1947 the festival now attracts more than 120,000 visitors during July & August…book now to avoid disappointment! Spectators come to admire new and established acting talent. The OffFestival is a series of street shows set up by would-be actors which take place late into the night with spectators and actors filling up the terraces, creating a unique atmosphere only found in Avignon during the summer.
Avignon nestles in the Rhône Valley where traditional wine making is helped by typically Mediterranean temperatures. It is the land of Côtes du Rhône, Côtes de Ventoux and Chateauneuf du Pape. Visiting the many vineyards in this area is a must but don’t forget the paracetamols for the morning after!!
The wider areas of Provence, around Avignon, are also definitely worth a visit as this is a beautiful and varied region to tour and explore. Provence is bounded by the Alps and Italy to the east and the Rhône River to the west, with the Mediterranean Sea providing its southern border. Provence is an interesting region with fertile plains in the Rhône valley to mountains in the east (notably Mont Ventoux, the Luberon range and the Alpilles), and marshlands in the south (the Camargue).

The city of Glanum has become one of the most important Roman excavations in France. Glanum possesses an impressive triumphal arch, erected between 10 and 25 AD, making it the oldest to be found in Gaul.
The Dentelles de Montmirail are a short distance from Avignon. This area is a paradise for rock climbing with a lot of well bolted routes and some adventure areas. There are also good opportunities for hiking and mountain biking in the area. Some marked trails going up and around the Dentelles des Montmirail are highly recommended.
