Arucas is in a northern province of Gran Canaria and is easily accessible with a cheap flight to Las Palmas. An area with much history and architecture, Arucas is extremely popular amongst travellers and holiday makers alike and is well known for it’s rum production.

The highlight and most renowned relic of Arucas’ rich cultural history is the Church, San Juan Bautista. This neo-gothic Parish Church is instantly recognisable and is home to many tourist treasures including paintings and sculptures. Architecture in Arucas follows similar suit; distinctive for its grey-blue volcanic stone indigenous to the area. Catch the mini-train from the church that takes you around the town past all the best sights in the Plaza de la constitucion, then you can hop off afterwards and decide where to visit in more detail. The market hall and market are worth a wander round, make sure you have a look at the old town hall in the constitution square which was hit by a cannonball during the civil war and remains unrepaired so that you can still see the damage caused.

The Gourie House museum can also be found just off the town square and behind the square is the Parque de los Continentes. Here you can discover plants and trees from all four corners of the globe including Bamboo from China. If it is peace and quiet you are looking for then head to the Garden of the Marchioness and take a walk round the vast lake which is surrounded by flowers and trees.

Volcano de Arucas

To the north-east of the town you will find Volcan de Arucas, an extinct volcano. The mountain is known for its fantastic views of Las Palmas and Gran Canaria's northern coastline. Volcan de Arucas also has a restaurant and a park for tourists heading for the peak. Enjoy a delicious meal in the restaurant with a backdrop of amazing panoramic views.

Arucas is famous for its production of rum, classical white wines and liquors. The community has been built on sugar cane agriculture since the 15th century and the local rum factory (which is still in full operation) opened in 1883. Here you have the opportunity to go into the cellars and sample some of Arucas’s oldest rum during a tasting session. The best place to sample Arucas rum is at the popular Volcan de Arucas restaurant where you can also get breathtaking views of Gran Canaria.
