Destination Review - Avignon

Avignon is a wonderful town. Enclosed by the magnificent ancient ramparts, it is very walkable. Plenty of museums, some wonderful shopping (my favourite was Les Halles for supreme Provencal foods) and the magnificent Papal Palace. What surprised me most about Avignon was how central it was to the Cotes du Rhone region. Chateauenuf-du-Pape is only 20 mins drive and Gigondas is only 30 minutes drive. Avignon is great place to explore the whole of Provence - the Luberon 30 mins drive, Mont Ventoux - 40 mins, St Remy 20, Nimes 15 mins, and the beautiful Dentelles de Montmirail hills (30 mins) that host most of the top wine villages. What an enchanting area!
