Destination Review - Rome
Rome was excellent, and we cannot recommend it highly enough!
Good tip in booking: If you’re not tied down to a date and just looking for a cheap holiday, use the calender-view low fare finder and search for the cheapest flights. Bargain booze!
We searched for our flights from Manchester a few months in hand and got them really cheap - it was also a lot cheaper to fly to Rome on the Thursday and come back on the Monday.
We also recommend getting a hotel near the Termini, one of Rome’s main Metro stations. Hotel was a lot, lot cheaper there and with the tube so close (and Metro day tickets so cheap) it saved us a load of cash to spend on the attractions, pasta and vino.
The Metro goes to all the big attractions, including the Coloseum where you walk out of the station with it towering straight in front of you across the road - unbelievable!
It was boiling when we there at the end of the Summer, so good tip is to save money by filling up water bottles for free at the water fountains dotted all around the City. Top saver!
Rome itself was gorgeous, and we recommend all the usual tourist places. We were disappointed by the Spanish Steps, and we would strongly recommend visiting it in the day as in the night its full of drunklen teenagers - hence our disappointment.
The highlight for us was the Trevi Fountain - absolutely gorgeous and the description of ’fountain’ doesn’t really do its size and detail any justice whatsoever. We were disappointed by the Sistene Chapel - bit of an anti-climax really, we actually thought the St. Peter Basilica was grander.
All in all there’s loads to see and do, and we recommend a slightly extended weekend break to all!
