Almería City
This is one of the most relaxing and enjoyable cities in the region. The city has a long and distinguished history and is located at the foot of a mountain range. Sitting on top is the 1000 yr old Arab arsenal and fort of Alcazaba. From the Alcazaba there is a great view of the city's fmous cave quarter, "Barrio de la Chanca" and of the fortified Cathedral which is worth a visit. Those who appreciate their food can enjoy some tasty locals specialities in Almeria such as "Trigo" (stew with grains of wheat, pork, beans and herbs), "Gachas" (hot and spicy clam stew) and "Escabeche e Sardines" (fresh sardines in hot sauce).
Cabo de Gata-Níjar
This is the regions largest costal protect area covering 45,663ha featuring Spain’s largest volcanic rock formation, hidden coves with white sandy beaches and tiny rocky islands teeming with marine life. The nature park has a visitors' centre is Los Amoladeras, between Retamar and San Miguel de Cabo de Gata on the AL822 at Km 7, 950 160 435. It has an exhibition on the park's volcanic geology, flora, saltpans and the sea. It can also provide information on walks, accommodation and activities in the park.
San José
San José has a nature park and one of the best beaches on the Cabo de Gata located along a dirt road to the Southwest of town. The area has many activities on offer including bicycle rental, horse riding, boat trips, Landrover tours and windsurfing.
Roquetas de Mar
Roquetas de Mar is situated 8 km along the coast, this is a popular resort for tourists with some good beaches. The salt lagoons begin at Las Marinas 4km south of Roquetas and are a good vantage point to watch the magnificent flamingos and other water birds in just about every season.
Mojacar
Mojacar is a Moorish fortress town on a high crag overlooking the shore, with gorgeous beaches and sparkling waters. The village has retained much of its original character, with its Moorish fortress called El Torreón and the Arch of Luciana, as well as the honeycomb of whitewashed, winding streets, each of which seems to lead the traveller to a lookout over the sparkling Mediterranean. The more lively part of Mojacar, Mojacar Playa boosts a variety of bars and restaurants.
