Dubrovnik City Guide

Eating

Budget: Mea Culpa (za Rokom, phone: (0)20 323 430) For those wishing to escape the fish, this pizzeria has an outside terrace and is situated close to Stradun, but away from the crowd. It offers a range of decent pizzas and salads, at good prices.
Mid-range: Lokanda Peskarija (Na Ponti, phone: (0)20 324 750) Serving dishes like kozice (shrimps) and crni rizot (squid risotto), Lokanda Peskarija combines great food and service with reasonable prices. Booking is advisable as the restaurant often gets crowded, despite the vast terrace. And if slippery things with tentacles aren't your cup of tea, here you'll find good salads and grilled fish.
Luxury: Proto (Siroka 1; phone: (0)20 323 234) A fish restaurant since 1886, Proto is a formal indoor restaurant with outdoor terrace, serving mainly fish and other seafood. However, meat dishes are equally as good. Expect to pay for it though - upwards of 300Kn for a meal.

Drinking

Although not renowned for its nightlife like other Eastern European towns have become recently, Dubrovnik still has plenty of bars and clubs to keep you busy in the evening. Arsenal (Prid Dvorom 1, phone: (0)20 321 065) serves food, and has a huge wine list. Nautically themed - Arsenal is set in the stone chamber where ships underwent repairs. By night, there's a dancing podium, the bar fills up and live bands play almost every style of music imaginable - it depends on when you go as to what music you'll find. If you happen to be around at the time of New Year, Arsenal is the place to go. If you're after something a little more delicate, try one of the cocktail bars. Smoothie Bar (Palmoticeva 5) offers a small range of cocktails, in addition to smoothies and bowls of cereal (trust us, not as strange as it sounds). Or for something more bar-orientated, try Eastwest (Frana Suplila bb.), situated right on the beach and offering a great range of cocktails, with a full-blown night club complete with DJ for the late-night partygoers. Also try Libertina (Zlatarska) located near the Sponza Palace, which has the feel of a local bar - complete with local drinkers.
