March/April

Ashbourne Royal Shrovetide Football Game
Ashbourne, Derbyshire
A real treat and a unique event that encapsulates rural Derbyshire life. Every Shrove Tuesday Ashbourne is divided into two teams who battle to score in goals that are three miles apart. It is a the epitome of a team game' and a rare event you won't see often. If you are visiting the area at this time it is worth paying a visit and perhaps helping one of the teams out!

May

Dot To Dot Festival
Nottingham This is fast becoming Nottingham's premier music event and is garnering recognition across the country. The calibre of artists and bands improves every year and during the last bank holiday weekend in May, Nottingham is overrun with live acts, music lovers flitting between gigs and naturally a carnival atmosphere ensues. Tickets can be booked in advance but there is also an allocation to buy on the day, or buy weekend tickets on the first day.

October

Nottingham Goose Fair
Nottingham
With rollercoaster's, the waltzes and any other brightly illuminated attractions, not forgetting hook-a-duck, Nottingham's Goose Fair is one of the oldest fairs in the world. The first record of the fair dates back to 1541 although it has evolved somewhat since then. Each October time, the outskirts of Nottingham are taken over by fair traders who transform plain fields into a colourful mechanical jungle full of thrills and merriment.

Robin Hood Beer Festival
Nottingham Castle
This four day festival is considered one of the largest real ale festivals in the world. Hundreds of ales, stouts and beers are available for sampling as hearty folk meander between stalls. The picturesque settings of Nottingham Castle are temporarily transformed into a field of golden nectar and it is a great chance to sample a great British pastime.

East Midlands Food Festival
Melton Mowbray
If you love food and drink, you will love this festival! Recognised as one of the largest festivals of its kind, the event - based in Melton Mowbray - attracts large crowds who turn out to see famous chefs cooking up a storm or sample the many homemade flavours on offer. It is a steal at 5 per person.

December

Lincoln Christmas Market
Lincoln
This is the largest market of its kind in Europe and seems to grow each year. The base of activity centres around the castle but its expansive nature has seen stalls creep down Steep Hill and spread around the famous medieval part of Lincoln. There are a great number of stalls to investigate, with a great number of German stalls selling their famous meat products. It is the perfect way to spend an evening wrapped up warm in the beautiful surroundings. Tel: 01522 873213 for more details.
