December
Christmas Market
Hamburg is renowned for its Christmas Markets. The main one is set against the backdrop of the imposing town hall but others can be found elsewhere in the city, including the Hanseatic Market at Gänsemarkt. Over 150 stalls will compete to tempt you with an array of roasted almonds, gingerbread Gluhwein and other tasty Christmassy morsels, as well as hand-crafted traditional German decorations and woodcarvings. The town is transformed into a Christmas wonderland with a 60ft tree, decorated by 10,000 candles, a choir sings every night at 6pm, a story teller regales children with stories and Father Christmas can be seen riding his sleigh high up in the night sky. And even better, while the adults are sipping a cockle-warming drink or perusing the stalls, children can go on one of five fairy-tale steamers on the Alster, each decorated into a wonderland.
