Madeira Carnival
Funchal
The carnival takes place in the capital of Funchal and transforms the whole town into a rainbow of colours and music. The first Saturday of the month is traditionally the opening ceremony and thus produces the biggest carnival atmosphere. Events and parties run well into the night on each day with the celebrations culminating in a Shrove Tuesday extravaganza. Free to attend.

The Feast of Nossa Senhora do Monte
Funchal
This is a flamboyant festival to mark the deliverance of the people from hunger and plague. Once again it takes place in the vibrant capital of Funchal. All manner of foods encompassing a vast array of tastes are available and celebrations continue deep into the night. The following day is a public holiday so everyone enjoys a lie-in before heading to church to celebrate Mass. Free to attend.

New Year's Fireworks
It is thought to be one of the largest public firework displays in Europe with the New Year's Eve night sky lit up with a collage of brash colours and the excited cheers of the watching crowd.
