Despite being famed for its canals, where lucky visitors can enjoy a trip down the waterways in a gondola, Venice has a lot more to offer.

Britons considering escaping to the historic city this year may wish to book cheap flights to Venice in time to enjoy its famed carnival, which runs from February 13th to the 24th.

This year the theme is set to be Sensation and opens with a masked ball at the Marco Polo Ballroom - where tourists can dance the night away in their traditional costume.

And to soak up a little more Italian culture, the carnival concludes with the chance to see the opera Il Barbiere di Siviglia by Gioacchino Rossini before another masked ball.

But while holidaymakers submerge themselves in the splendour of the event, the Guardian's John Brunton has offered visitors some tips on eating in the city for less.

"Have your main meal at lunchtime when prices are much lower, then bar hop at night eating snacks. Arrive for lunch at midday sharp, as this is when the day's pasta is served and portions never last long," he advised.
