Britons planning to book cheap flights to Venice may wish to journey 30 minutes from the airport to discover the "hidden secret" of Treviso.
Writing on the Guardian's travel pages, John Brunton explains that the city is less touristy and expensive than Venice itself.
In addition, it is currently hosting a collection of art by Canaletto, plus several other pieces depicting the beautiful Venetian landscapes.
"What is a delight is just to get lost in the maze of backstreets and romantic canals. The prettiest canal is Buranelli, lined with pastel palaces and wrought-iron bridges," Mr Brunton explains.
He adds that Treviso is so small a visitor can walk around the entire medieval city wall in one hour.
However, Britons may want to get their skates on if they are planning to holiday in Venice this year because if they choose to visit between February 13th and 24th they can enjoy some of the activities taking place as part of the famed Venetian Carnival.
