Cheap flights to Madrid could prove the ideal first step along a route to Colombia, it has been advised.
The suggestion comes from Richard Green, travel expert at the Sunday Times, in response to a reader's question.
He explains that there are no direct flights to Colombia from within the UK - meaning a stop-off is essential.
Cheap flights to Madrid are among the recommendations for a low-cost means of reaching an airport which does serve the final destination.
Mr Green adds that the alternative is likely to involve flying to the US before changing routes.
Travellers stepping off of cheap flights to Madrid could find they are tempted to stay in the Spanish city for a while.
But Turismo Colombia - the nation's tourist board - suggests that Colombia's geography makes it worth a visit.
This is by virtue of it including mountains, forests, rivers, deserts and coastlines facing two different oceans.
