People who are soon to book their cheap flights to Rome and prepare for an Italian getaway this year could find that heading off the beaten track and exploring the nearby Alps allows them the chance to escape the tourists.
That is what Matt Rudd and his family discovered when they visited the Mediterranean country.
Writing on the online pages of the Times, he explained that the Alps in summer had still been largely undiscovered by UK visitors and that a whole day could go past without bumping into a British tourist.
"When it isn't smothered in snow, it is absolutely beautiful ... dark, looming mountains in the distance, lush, grass-covered, less looming ones in the foreground, clear trekking paths," he said of the mountain he explored.
All that climbing is likely to make kids work out their appetites, however, but the Times' Jane Knight recently explained that she and her son enjoyed a treasure hunt with a difference while on holiday in Italy - searching for truffles.
