Britons looking for a cultural getaway for their holiday this year may be tempted to book cheap flights to Venice and catch the end of winter there after hearing the testimony of one celebrity.

Writer and broadcaster Janet Street-Porter asserts that she first visited the city of canals 40 years ago and that during winter the destination was "utterly magical".

On arriving for a Valentine's break with her then husband, the city was covered in thick fog.

"Exploring the city was a bit like starring in a black-and-white thriller, the mist swirling around the vaporetti [waterbuses] as we chugged up and down the Grand Canal and out to the empty beaches on the Lido wrapped up in thick coats and scarves," Janet explains.

She adds that after the end of a day's sight-seeing, she and her husband would feast on pasta before visiting the city's empty churches and taking in St Mark's Square.

Janet sums up her Venetian experience as being "unforgettable".

And by choosing to visit the city at Valentine's Day, Britons can also enjoy the famous Venetian Carnival, which takes place between February 13th and 24th.
