Britons planning on booking cheap flights to Crete to soak up the summer sun have been advised that the best place to do this is on one of the island's southern beaches.

In an article for the Telegraph, Robin Gauldie said Matala used to be a "hippie haven" and still carries with it a laid-back attitude as people relax on its beautiful yellow sand.

And he advises that for those who wish to thoroughly top up their tans, Red Beach is the best place to do the job, while at Paleochora there is a sheltered, shallow sandy bay which could be the perfect play area for young children.

However, there is more to see and do in Crete than its stunning beaches, with Mr Gauldie pointing to Knossos, an ancient Minoan city that has been excavated, as a top tourist attraction.

Another fan of the Greek island is Daniel Finkelstein, who recently wrote in the Times that when contemplating if Crete had a serious downside, he was left stumped.
