A UK family who took cheap flights to Spain recently were met when they touched down by the donkey who was to accompany them on their walking holiday around the country.

In an article for the Guardian, Clover Stroud notes that Madrileno the donkey was her family's companion as they set out on a four-day trip around the region of Castile and Leon.

She remarks that when she first told her friends about her plans to explore Spain on a donkey at Easter, it had caused some amusement due to its biblical overtones.

However, Ms Stroud adds: "It's impossible not to soften at the sight of those outlandishly huge ears, the soft, biscuit-coloured nose and deep brown eyes that seem to hold some knowledge I'll never understand."

Madrileno proved useful in keeping her children entertained and carrying their picnic lunch each day.

Britons who have booked cheap flights to Spain and who are also looking for a way to get back to nature may wish to pack their tents.

The Times' Keith Didcock recently stated that the campsite at Cala Llevado, near Barcelona, offered views of rocky coves.
