Britons who plan to book cheap flights to Venice for their holiday this year have been advised by one star that if they cannot fall in love with the city, then they are "never going to fall in love".

Speaking to the Telegraph, actor Geoffrey Palmer - who has starred in Tomorrow Never Dies and As Time Goes By - explains that he first visited the Italian city of canals in 1949.

He "instantly" fell in love with it and has returned several times since and he notes that Venice has changed "very little" in this time.

"The great thing about Venice is that it has been falling down for a thousand years and, thankfully, doesn't appear to be falling down anymore," Palmer explains.

And he offers a tip to any holidaymakers planning to book cheap flights to Venice - to visit Caffe Florian on St Mark's Square for coffee, which he claims is part of the experience and "has to be done".

The Independent's Rhiannon Batten recently stated that Venice is home to almost as many palaces as canals, making it an "obvious jumping-off" place to find out more about Italy's history.
