Many people planning a holiday to Spain miss out on visiting the port city of Malaga in the south of the country, one sector commentator has claimed.

However, those looking for cheap flights to Malaga may be interested to know that Sankha Guha - writing on the online pages of the Independent - said that the city centre was "buzzing" with the sound of people enjoying themselves.

Travellers with a love of art may also find the destination to be a place of interest as it was the birthplace of Pablo Picasso.

For food fans, Mr Guha notes that the clams in the city restaurants are "fragrant" while the calamares are "meltingly soft" and the whole meal came to less than £10 each.

"I can see planes rising soundlessly from the distant airport. I am out of time. And then it dawns on me. I have to come back," he concludes.

Meanwhile, Francesco Frangialli, secretary-general of the UN World Tourism Organisation, has said that while the credit crunch and rising fuel prices are putting pressure on the sector, many people are still keen to use budget airlines.
