For those looking to really get a taste of history, visiting some of the old towns and cities in Spain may be just the ticket.
Hiring a car after a cheap flight to Spain and driving through Catalan towns such as Besalu and Santa Pau can give holidaymakers a real taste of the country's traditions, one travel writer claims.
And with stunning scenery of extinct volcanoes to boot, the region may prove to be a real hit for people looking for something different from their break to Spain.
The Mirror's Helen Beatty said that the scenery in La Garrotxa Volcanic Zone National Park was of such beauty that her and her companion had to keep on stopping to take it all in.
Taking in the sights of extinct volcanoes - and stopping along the way for coffee and cake - is what the writer described as "perfect. Utterly relaxed".
But the volcanic region is not the only thing to tempt holidaymakers to Spain. Anthony Peregrine recently wrote in an article for the Times that a visit to the traditional wine-making region of Rioja makes it easy to forget all the trials and tribulations of everyday life back home.
