Holidaymakers looking to find unspoilt beauty on the Adriatic coastline would do well to book a cheap flight to Dubrovnik and then drive south of the city into Montenegro.

The three-year-old country lies roughly half an hour's drive from the airport and offers an unspoilt coastline forming part of what is increasingly knows at the Balkan Riviera.

Anya Tyzack writes in the Telegraph that the country's coastline retains an air of glamour.

"It is as peaceful as the Italian lakes, with a rocky shoreline akin to the Green islands, and a St Tropez climate. Yet at the same time it is distinctly Balkan," she says.

Towns such as Perast, which is a Unesco world heritage site, add a touch of Venetian architecture to the country's coastline - and being located around 70km from Dubrovnik, accessibility is generally quick.

Two Brits who bought a property in the town, Jennifer Sutton and her daughter Kate Perks, told the newspaper they felt it looked like Italy so decided to stop here rather than continue any further into the country.

However, the Croatian city of Dubrovnik also has a lot of attractions, so those who do not wish to hire a car after their cheap flights to Dubrovnik need not worry, as the city is itself steeped in culture and history.
