When asked where he was planning to spend his summer this year, poet and academic Craig Raine revealed it would be in Italy's famed city of canals, which may inspire other travellers to book cheap flights to Venice.
Speaking to the Times, Mr Raine said he had chosen the destination as he owned an apartment there, after first visiting in Christmas 1972.
"It's the most beautiful place in the world ... and winter's my favourite time, with the seagulls coming out of the fog," he added.
Mr Raine, who teaches at Oxford, said he particularly enjoyed the laid-back pace of life on offer in Venice.
The city is also a favourite with the journalist Janet Street-Porter.
She recently wrote in the Independent that during the winter the destination was "utterly magical".
And travellers may be further inspired to book cheap flights to Venice after hearing Ms Street-Porter summed up her Venetian experience as being "unforgettable".
