When in Rome, as the old adage goes, do as the Romans do. By following such advice, holidaymakers who have made the most of cheap flights to Rome for a break may be able to continue to save money.
Executive director of the Association of Independent Tour Operators Kate Kenward noted that those who make the effort to follow local traditions could keep in better control of their money while abroad.
"In Italy, stand up at the bar for your espresso or beer - it's cheaper than sitting at a table and is what the Italians do," she said.
But it's not only in Italy where following such advice could prove to be beneficial. Eating and drinking local food and drink will be cheaper than opting for imported fare, Ms Kenward added.
And trying to find quieter beaches may bring a number of benefits too, she suggested. Sun loungers on popular stretches of coastline tend to have higher prices than those on quieter stretches, she added.
Book cheap flights to Rome online from as little as £19.99 with Jet2.com, the friendly low fares airline.
