The rules regarding hand luggage allowances on cheap flights to Spain or any other destination will remain different with each carrier for a number of reasons, it has been claimed.

Susan Parsons, manager of trade relations at ABTA - The Travel Association, responded to calls for standardisation by arguing that uniformity across all airlines could be considered anti-competitive.

Executive chairman of the Air Operators Association Ed Anderson recently told the Times that it would be "much better" if rules were standardised.

However, Ms Parsons disagreed. She noted that the different hand luggage allowances were a selling point for a number of airlines. Besides this, different types of passenger tend to have varying hand luggage requirements, she added.

"The bottom line ought to be that the traveller must check the exact baggage limit for the airline they are travelling with," Ms Parsons said.

For passengers who have booked cheap flights with Jet2, hand luggage must not exceed 10kg in weight and must not be larger than 50x38x26 cm in size, including wheels and handles.
