Low-cost airlines are "most definitely" going to become the alternative for business travel in the future, one sector commentator has claimed.

Kevin Mitchell, chairman of the Business Travel Coalition, explained that in this marketplace, many large international companies were already choosing to fly in this way.

He added that this was because many budget carriers were increasingly using loyalty points for travellers in an attempt to lower the cost of flying.

Businesses in the UK may be interested to learn that Jet2.com offers cheap flights from Belfast, Blackpool, Edinburgh, Leeds and Bradford, Manchester and Newcastle.

"Close to 70 per cent of the revenue for the airlines from the business travel segment come from small and mid-size airlines," Mr Mitchell noted.

According to the Business Travel Coalition's October 2008 report - The Financial Crisis & Travel Policy Changes - 34.4 per cent of respondents indicated that this year, their corporation cut back on the use of major network airlines in favour of low-cost carriers.
