Booking a cheap flight to Spain and spending time working there could be seen as something positive to put on a CV.
Job losses and uncertainty are fuelling a new generation of travellers known as grown-up gappers, according to Travelex.
Research showed those aged between 30 and 55 are most likely to jet off, with 63 per cent admitting they would use their time out of the workplace to visit another country.
Tom Griffiths, founder of gapyear.com, said going abroad could be a great opportunity for people to put their knowledge and expertise to use by volunteering or working.
A venture people may want to look into is completing a TEFL (teaching English as a foreign language) course. Using the qualification to tutor university students in Barcelona could be an effective way to finance a few months overseas.
"We know that employers like the life skills that you develop when you're overseas," Mr Griffiths said.
"It's seen as a positive on your CV, the fact that you're not sitting back looking unemployed."
