Holidaymakers who have booked cheap flights to Spain might want to get involved with a messy traditional custom – a tomato fight.
This year, La Tomatina is being held on August 26th in Bunol – where the population of the village is expected to quadruple in size to some 30,000.
It is a yearly ritual that dates back to 1945, when a group of young people were celebrating a parade and listening to music. When a squabble broke out, some participants began throwing tomatoes from nearby market stalls.
The following year, individuals brought their own red fruits to repeat the battle and now it has gown to be an annual tradition.
Travellers planning on taking part this year might want to take note of some of the organiser's advice and wear old clothes they do not mind getting ruined, book accommodation in advance and – most of all – enjoy it.
Excursion buses run from Barcelona to the location of the tomato fight, meaning holidaymakers could combine the experience with a city break.
