Those considering cheap flights to Venice may be buoyed by the comments featured in a new article this week.
In a piece for the Independent, Peter Popham looked at the English love affair with the city and noted it is something that goes back to the days of William Shakespeare.
He said the bard used Venice as the setting for two of his plays, adding since then a number of other artists have been inspired by the city.
Nicolas Roeg, the film director who shot his "masterpiece" horror thriller Don't Look Now along the streets and canals of the area, was once quoted as saying the city was "a work of art which reveals itself slowly".
Sir Elton John, on the other hand, was highlighted as the "proud owner of a palazzo" in the region and author Henry James wrote a number of his most celebrated works when staying there.
Art critic John Ruskin, historian Lord Norwich, best-selling children's writer Mary Hoffman and poet Lord Byron are also noted as famed for their love of Venice.
Don't Look Now, which used the scenery of the city in many key scenes, won a Bafta in 1974 for cinematography.
