Holidaymakers looking for a place to go with their cheap flights to Spain, may like to consider a visit to the mountainous region of the country.

The provinces of Asturias and Cantabria, as well as the Picos de Europa in the north of Spain, offer great holiday opportunities for families, according to one travel writer.

Fred Mawer, writing in the Telegraph, described the region as "a ravishingly beautiful little range of lofty limestone peaks and lush, high-altitude pastures".

He said it is only a 30-minute drive to the beach, meaning visitors can choose to relax by the sea or take in the air of the mountains.

A range of walks are on offer for the more outdoors types, including those that are suitable for young children, such as a trip to the glacial lakes of Enol and La Ercina.

Meanwhile, the seaside, which has an atmosphere similar to Cornwall, according to the writer, has rock pools, tidal lagoons and space for ball games.

With plenty of campsites and casas available for accommodation, there could be something for everyone's tastes.

Visitors with cheap flights to Spain who are more inclined towards the city, may also be interested in a series of concerts taking place in Barcelona.

Coldplay, McFly and the Hipnotik festival will all be appearing in the city throughout September.
