Before booking cheap flights to Spain, among other destinations, people setting out on a gap year should be sure to engage in some fundraising activities.

Advice has been offered to those planning an extended trip, particularly if they are hoping to combine travel with volunteer work.

This comes from i-to-i, which helps people find projects in a variety of countries.

Katie Mossman, spokesperson for the company, explained many people run out of money by the time they reach their volunteer destinations.

She said: "We encourage them to do a lot of fundraising before they go, just to create a lot more awareness for what they are doing."

In addition, Ms Mossman advised taking a combination of cash, credit or debit cards and travellers cheques – although she said the latter are becoming slightly outdated.

Travel cards may also be a good idea, she suggested.

The International Currency Exchange warned students, including those booking cheap flights to Spain, they should be sure to protect themselves against credit card fraud as they embark on big trips.
