Holidaymakers who have had to cut down on their travel plans during the ongoing credit crunch are more likely to go to "touristy" destinations, as they believe they will get their money's worth in such a location, according to one industry commentator.
A spokesperson for the Association of Independent Tour Operators claimed that Europe in particular was still popular and Britons planning such a vacation may be interested to know that Jet2.com offers cheap flights from Manchester, Newcastle, Belfast, Blackpool, Edinburgh, Leeds and Bradford airports.
"People will go to touristy places because people may feel they get better value for money there, and there is a greater infrastructure for tourism," the representative explained.
While he noted that it was "not comparable" to Europe, he said that Peru may also be a popular budget holiday destination, if it was planned correctly.
According to Opodo's report - Up and Coming Destinations for 2009 - published in October, Peru is now in first place, after bookings increased by 98 per cent.
