Those considering cheap flights to Venice have been advised the city is likely to remain as popular with holidaymakers as ever.
A spokeswoman for the Italian State Tourist Board said that as a destination it is very unique and there is nothing like it to be found anywhere else in the world.
Alessandra Smith went on to say the beauty of its architecture was a big draw for some, but added this was also tinged with a level of fragility that makes it so precious experts sometimes call for limitations on tourism.
However, she noted this is something that would be "extremely difficult" to put in place and would also be very unpopular.
"They have been trying to find a way of limiting tourists but they have never really done it. They said that it is difficult to do something like that," Ms Smith concluded.
In a recent article for the Telegraph, a spokesman for the city's local council said such a plan was controversial as it is contrary to the "democratic principle that anyone should be able to come to Venice".
