Cheap flights to Spain are a good holiday option for travellers on a budget, if a new Post Office report is anything to go by.

Spain is the top budget destination for meals out and has the second best affordability overall, the research found.

Budget travellers can expect their money to go further in Spain than any other eurozone destination.

Holidaymakers may consider the country's relative affordability as a reason to book cheap flights.

Spain came second in the Post Office's Beach Barometer 2009 survey, which calculated the total cost of ten essential holiday items, including sightseeing and meals. The cost for Spain was a mere €60.50 (£53.51).

Sarah Munro, Post Office travel specialist, said: "We found that while a family meal costs around £57 in Brighton, it would set UK tourists back much less in Croatia and Bulgaria - and least of all, £31, in Spain".

The report also finds nearly half of UK holidaymakers are eager to cut unnecessary spending on holiday, which explains why Spain is such a popular holiday idea.

A gradual increase in the value of the pound may encourage holidaymakers to book cheap flights to Spain.
