Holidaymakers looking for cheap flights to Spain may be gladdened by news that hotels are more affordable than this time last year, according to the findings of a new report.

Spain's National Statistics Institute (INE) announced a 4.6 fall in hotel rates during August compared with 12 months previously.

Travellers eager to explore the markets of Barcelona or lie on a beach in Almeria can expect to make greater savings this year.

Those looking for luxury accommodation stand to benefit most, as five-star hotels recorded a year-on-year decrease in rates of 9.1 per cent in August, the statistics show.

Meanwhile, visitors to the canyons and forests of Aragon can make savings of up to 30 per cent.

There were 763,840 UK travellers who made trips to Spain in August 2009, making a total of 4.8 million overnight stays, the report found.

Revenue from tourism amounts to 11 per cent of Spain's gross domestic product.
