Cyprus marks its Independence Day on October 1st, featuring a public holiday with parades, parties and national gatherings.

Many of the events take place in the capital Nicosia, including a military procession through its medieval streets, but travellers who book cheap flights to Paphos can also expect to encounter festivities in other locations.

Visitors to the town can see Paphos Castle, a Byzantine fort rebuilt in the 13th century, or experience "a steaming Cypriot coffee or a mouth-watering meal in one of the taverns", according to discoverpaphos.com.

Tourism accounts for 10.6 per cent of Cyprus's gross domestic product, and travellers from the UK represent approximately half of the country's earnings from this sector, spending €71.80 a day on average in 2008.

The continued popularity of Cyprus as a destination may appear to justify claims by Ian Bradley, spokesman for the Association of Independent Tour Operators (AITO), that "things are looking up" for the travel industry.
