Travellers who book cheap flights to Milan can enjoy a chance to get away from it all in the countryside found to the north of the city.

London Evening Standard journalist Lee Marshall recounted a trip to Lake Maggiore, which is surrounded by small towns such as Stresa, Lesa and Arona.

He said although it is known for being a holiday destination, it also has a rich history of art and fashion, with over 2,000 craft companies found in the area.

Recounting the spectacular views the body of water offers, the correspondent said: "[It is] rimmed by verdant gardens and aristocratic villas and backed by swaggering mountains that in some places seem to rise sheer out of the water."

His article also suggested mixing a trip up with visits to rural locations, adding tourists could head to the Design Museum in the Parco Sempione, which holds a number of long-running exhibitions.

Culture vultures could also enjoy a trip to the Teatro alla Scalla, one of Milan's famous opera houses.
