Those looking to get in the mood for Christmas should book cheap flights to Dusseldorf through Jet2.com, if one commentator's words are anything to go by.

According to the German National Tourist Office, the country's festive markets have a "very special atmosphere" and are set in spectacular locations.

Sales promotion manager Katrin Lukosch explained the events are particularly popular with the over-50s, although they could also be great for a family trip.

Discussing the appeal of the attractions, she said: "It is mostly all about drinking mulled wine, eating all the Christmas food. Goods sold there include wooden crafts, glass crafts and lots of hand made things."

The expert suggested the country could be great for a luxury break – a holiday that could be made more budget-friendly by booking cheap flights to Dusseldorf.

Weihnachtsmarkt is Dusseldorf's festive event this year, taking place from now (November 26th) to December 23rd.

It is staged at six locations in the Old Town area of the city.
