UK consumers would rather book cheap flights to Turkey than make other discretionary purchases, if one expert is to be believed.

Travel expert Bob Atkinson said when faced with an either-or situation, most people would pay for a holiday instead of a new sofa.

He works for comparison service travelsupermarket.com and explained a sunshine break is "one of the main highlights of the year" for many British residents.

The opportunity to rest, relax on the beach, party or indulge in interests is not one to be missed in 2010, Mr Atkinson added.

He remarked: "[Travellers] will give up all sorts of things in order to save up and spend on a trip or a series of trips as a reward for working hard during the year."

Last month, the comparison site suggested UK holidaymakers are set to book cheap flights to Turkey, Sharm el Sheikh and Canary Island destinations in 2010.
