As the festive season fast approaches, many Britons may be contemplating a Christmas with a difference this year.

Such individuals may be pleased to hear that a trip for a traditional US Christmas in New York will afford them a whole host of different ice-skating events to take part in - whether they are wobbly on their feet or a Torvill and Dean-style pro.

According to the New York Times' Monica Drake, the American Museum of Natural history has a 150 by 80 foot temporary rink on its terrace which features a 17-foot stainless steel polar bear at its centre.

And on Pier 17 at the South Street Seaport there is an 8,000 square-foot rink where visitors will be able to enjoy live music as they skate.

"So wave your white flag and sign up for skating lessons, because no matter what it feels like outside, winter is coming, along with its many redeeming rituals," Ms Drake concludes.

Britons may be interested to hear that they can book cheap flights to New York with budget airline Jet2.com.

Meanwhile, it has been widely reported that several ski resorts in the US have opened early due to heavy snowfall.
