Tom Hall, travel editor at Lonely Planet, said that the Big Apple had far more to offer travellers than shopping alone and should not simply be seen as the domain of the super rich.
He added that the idea of skipping across the pond for a few days was a "mentally appealing one" and that there were some very good value deals currently available on both flights and hotels for people wishing to do so.
"I think if people are in a position to travel, this is actually a good time to do so. The closer you get to Christmas, the more expensive it will get," Mr Hall explained.
