Paris still has a bohemian soul as portrayed in the hit musical Moulin Rouge, according to one sector commentator; the key is knowing where to find it.

Writing on the online pages of the Times, Vincent Crump acknowledges that the Eiffel Tower is "riveting" to look at, but there are still many hidden gems located within the French capital that Britons may wish to explore.

Actress, singer and film director Jane Birkin - who the famous Hermes Birkin bag is named after - advises that the Paris Mosque, which is within walking distance from the Notre Dame, is the perfect place to escape the tourists and enjoy a side of Paris which has not changed since the 1920s.

And across the road from the mosque is the Jardin des Plantes, a huge park featuring a zoo along with a number of 19th-century glasshouses full of tropical plants.

Britons hoping to have their own taste of bohemia on a trip to the French capital may be interested to know that they can book cheap flights to Paris with Jet2.com.

The Mas Perangel in the French Pyrennees has been named as a finalist in the Times' Best Place to Stay in Europe category.
