Parents planning to whisk their children off for a Christmas with a difference this year by taking them on a dream ski holiday have been advised by one sector commentator to consider a smaller resort.

Speaking to online resource OnTheSnow.com, Mike Harrelson of Travel Montana said that families should consider winter sports destinations that are off the beaten track so that holidaymakers are not forced to contend with large groups of tourists and long queues for the lifts.

"Peace and goodwill towards men, women and kids is greatly enhanced by a low-key, low-stress, high-quality experience," he added.

Mr Harrelson went on to advise that if families were unable to stay on the mountain they wished to ski on, they should leave early enough that they arrive half an hour before the chairlifts got going on order to purchase tickets, find a decent parking spot and beat the crowds.

Britons planning such a trip may be interested to know that they can book cheap ski flights through Jet2.com, the budget airline.

Meanwhile, Bill Cox of the Wolf Creek resort in Utah has suggested that families should get to know their holiday surroundings as soon as they arrive.
