The lure of holidays on small islands is too much for some friends and families to ignore which is why resorts like Tenerife, Cyprus and Majorca are regularly amongst the most visited holiday destinations. However, the top five visited islands in the summer of 2010 are all just a short flight away, suggesting us Brits like to keep things close-ish to home.

Short Flight Times Make the Med Popular

The most popular island to visit with cheap flights is Tenerife. The Canary Island offers gorgeous beaches, a vibrant nightlife and plenty of other things to do and see. It is also only a short flight away from most UK airports.

Following Tenerife is cheap flights to Cyprus, Majorca, Gran Canaria and Jersey in second, third, fourth and fifth respectively.

All of these destinations benefit from short flight times, with only Cyprus taking around four hours.

In fact, in the top ten, there were only two destination islands outside of Europe, both of which were off the coast of America.
