There is a quaint little part of Gran Canaria that has quietly built a reputation as the Venice of the island. Puerto de Mogan shrinks in size compared to some of the more boisterous resorts on Gran Canaria but this has made it a haven of tranquillity – often visited by couples and families.

Puerto de Mogan gets its nickname as ‘Little Venice’ because of the many water features and canals that weave along its beach and into the town. However, although it exudes a traditional image, this design was no accident.

A Pocket of Italy on Gran Canaria

Italian designers wanted to create an Italian vibe in this quieter part of the Spanish island and as such, a pedestrian-orientated resort was born. Today, the beach attracts modest crowds on cheap flights to Gran Canaria but there is no background noise of vehicles to distort the calm sounds of the shore lapping the beach.

Additionally, the Italian brickwork in the town has led to the development of arches and maze-like walkways connecting all of the shops and eateries.

Even the hotels have been sympathetically built into the surroundings so that they don’t jut into the skyline too much. In fact, all modern buildings are limited to two stories by law.

All of this has helped to create a south-western gem on the island of Gran Canaria, perfect for cheap flights for families and couples.
