Unlocking the Charm and Excitement of Zermatt

As the Swiss village of Zermatt gets warmed up ready for the ski season The Telegraph have been mulling over its many charms. Described as a “sporty resort” it attracts a varied clientele including the “well-heeled” and international class. Although expect to see a few elderly couples still enjoying the famous ski conditions at Zermatt.

The former village is popular all year round but not just for ski. It has long been regarded as a charming part of the world that is why in the summer, throngs of tourists arriving on cheap flights to Geneva. However, it is in the ski season that Zermatt really comes to life.

Mixing Old and New

Plenty of development has expanded the village but you still won’t find any cars charging around the streets, only the usual sight of buggies ferrying people to and fro. It is a resort of new and old proportions. Chris Gill and Dave Watts wrote in the Telegraph saying:

“The resort is a mixture of ancient chalets and barns, grand 19th-century hotels and modern buildings, most in traditional style but some decidedly funky.

“But modern-day Zermatt sprawls along both sides of the river with a lot of new building[s] at both ends and up the sides of the mountains that rise steeply on each side.”

Visitors arriving at Zermatt from cheap flights to Geneva will also find a number of extensive slopes, designed for the more assured skier and snowboarder.
