Although the Greek island of Rhodes has in the past been seen as a traditional mass-market holiday destination, according to one sector commentator it is now due for a five-star makeover.

A writer for the online pages of the Observer explained that several luxury five-star rated hotels are due to open next year, which may see the island re-branding itself as a top-end of the market choice.

The Atrium Prestige will open its doors to holidaymakers in early spring and is named after an ancient paradise described in Greek legend.

It will feature six treatment rooms and is situated just outside of Rhodes town.

In May, La Marquise will open, boasting state-of-the-art spa facilities, while later in the year the Port Royal Villas and Spa will see visitors enjoying its proximity to the east coast beach of Kolymbia in Afandou.

Britons hoping to lap up some luxury on the island may be pleased to hear that they can book cheap flights to Rhodes with Jet2.com, the budget airline.

Meanwhile, one Guardian reader has explained that a night-time tour of Rome may be an original way of taking in the city.
