Skiing and eating don’t necessarily go hand-in-hand – it’s certainly not recommended to hit the slopes after you have polished off a three course meal but having somewhere to enjoy a delicious meal is a great way to toast a day on the slopes.

>This is firmly the opinion of Andrew Purvis who was writing in the Telegraph recently. He described Switzerland as “the best location in the world for "slopeside" fine dining” with Zermatt featuring heavily amongst his chosen selections.

Homely and Authentic Haute Cuisine

He says that, when hitting the Matterhorn, “you had better not get distracted by the view – or ski too fast – or you will miss the first four mountain restaurants for which the area is famous.”

Amongst these four is a charming little restaurant called Findlerhof, which specialises in mountain grub. So what is mountain grub? Mr. Purvis describes this as “haute cuisine in a topographical sense, but homely and authentic rather than pretentious”.

It is fair to say that there is plenty of choice too with Zermatt boasting 100 restaurants in its centre. This is one of the reasons that cheap flights to Chambery and Geneva for Zermatt are so popular – a perfect blend of great skiing conditions and superb food.
